Anderson B. Motley, Jr. of Danville VA passed away Sunday, May 5, 2019 at his residence. Born in Pittsylvania County on February 26, 1926, he was the son of the late Anderson B. Motley, Sr., and Laura Pickeral Motley of Chatham and Gretna, Va. He was married for 53 years to Mary Helen Hurt Motley of Abingdon, VA, who predeceased him on March 3, 2000. He was also predeceased by sons, Anderson B. Motley, III and Robert H. Motley; one sister, Edna Motley Billips of Nashville, TN; and one brother, Otis A. Motley of Roanoke, Va. He is survived by a daughter, Catherine “Betsy” Motley Payne and her husband, David, of Richmond, VA and a daughter-in-law, Virginia Coleburn Motley of Blackstone, VA; granddaughters, Ashley E. Payne and Emily C. Payne both of Richmond VA; Susan Motley McKinney of Richmond, VA; and grandson, Robert H. Motley, Jr. of Blackstone, VA. He is also survived by one sister, Lelia Motley Brown and her husband, Dr. Dudley E. Brown, Jr. of Reston, VA. He attended Chatham High School and graduated from Hargrave Military Academy. He attended Washington and Lee University and Emory and Henry College. He graduated from the Medical College of Virginia School of Pharmacy. He was a veteran of World War II, attended the Naval pre-midshipmen’s school at Princeton University, and the Naval pre-flight school at the University of North Carolina. For many years, Mr. Motley owned and operated Motley’s Pharmacy on West Main Street. He was noted for accommodating people by opening the pharmacy after closing hours. He was a long standing member of the First Presbyterian Church of Danville and served as a Deacon or and Elder for 26 years. He was a member of the Outlook Bible Class, for which he served as a past president in the 1950s. Mr. Motley was a member of the sons of the American Revolution, a life member of the Improved Order of Redmen, and a member for 50 years in the Travelers Protective Association. He was a past member of the Danville “Host” Lions Club, past director of the Danville YMCA (1970-1975), past director of the Danville Cancer Society, past member of the Danville Elks Club, the Danville Golf Club, Danville German Club, Danville Young Men’s Club and the American Legion. Funeral services will be held at Townes Memorial Chapel on Thursday, May 9, 2019, at 11:00 am, with the Reverend Dr. John McDonald officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home, from 10:00 to 11:00 am. Interment will follow at Gretna Burial Park at 2:00 pm. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to their favorite charity. Townes Funeral Home, 215 West Main Street, is serving the Motley family.
