Alma Williams

Alma Walters Williams, age 96, formerly of Sutherlin, VA passed away Friday, May 20, 2016 at The Carrington, Lynchburg, VA after five years of declining health. Born January 8, 1920, she was married to Philip Pierpont Williams who predeceased her January 5, 1998. She was the daughter of the late Joel Clarence and Ruby Richardson Walters. Before moving to The Carrington in 2011, she lived on the family farm in Sutherlin, VA. She was a graduate of Dan River High School where she later served as a teacher’s aide. She also worked at L. Herman in ladies’ fashion. As a volunteer at Danville Regional Medical Center for eight years, she logged more than 1000 hours of service to others. She was the oldest member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church and the Margaret Hankins Homemakers Club. Active in the Pittsylvania Farm Bureau, she served as Women’s Chair and on the State Board. Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Williams Walton and husband Lloyd of Appomattox; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Williams of Charlotte, NC;  five grandchildren, Cheryl Walton Gullickson (Richard) of Evans, GA, Laura Walton Bell (Leonard) of Auburn, AL, Philip Michael Williams (Angela) of Chase City, VA, Mark Andrew Williams (Susan) of Matthews, NC, and Philip Robert Williams (Lauren) of Rock Hill, SC. She is also survived by a special niece Kayre Watson (Charles) of Blanche, NC and three special nephews Jack Walters (Jolene) of Danville, VA, John Walters (June) of Ringgold, VA and Dean Walters (Dianne) of Lynchburg, VA. She is also survived by fifthteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Philip Walters Williams; two sisters, Inez Edge and Lois Keesee Parker; and two brothers, Joel Jackson Walters, Sr. and George Lee Walters. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 23 at 11 am from Townes Memorial Chapel by the Reverend James Wesley Williams with special music provided by Mrs. Susie Thomas. Both are treasured family friends from Appomattox, VA. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of Lloyd and Shirley Walton in Appomattox. The family wishes to express deep appreciation to the wonderful and caring staff at The Carrington. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Laurel Grove Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, P. O.
