Alan Forster Sands, 75 of Danville, Virginia passed away on Friday, March 29, 2019 at Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and Health Care Facility after a battle with brain cancer. Alan was born on September 8, 1943 in Miami, Florida to the late Elmer Samuel Sands and Sylvia Bailey Forster Sands. Alan is survived by his wife Nancy Marie Polick Sands, who he married on August 19, 1967 in Rome, Georgia, his son Andrew Christopher Sands and his wife Sharon Hood Sands, his grandsons Griffin Brady Sands and Porter Reid Sands of Cascade, Virginia. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Claudia Polick Floyd her husband Dr. Gwynne Douglas Floyd and his brother-in-law James Micardy Polick, Sr. and many nieces and nephews. Alan is preceded by a daughter, Andrea Christine Sands. He was a graduate of Shorter University, Rome, Georgia with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Studies and a Master’s Degree in History from Radford University, Radford, Virginia. Alan began his teaching career in Buckingham County, Virginia at Buckingham County High School. He also taught at R.B. Stall High School in Charleston, SC. After receiving his Master’s Degree, he taught 27 years at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia. After his retirement from Hargrave he taught GED at Green Rock Correctional Facility in Chatham, Virginia. His teaching career expanded almost 50 years. His legacy will live on through the young men and women he taught and made an impact on their lives. He will be missed by his many students and friends. Saturday, April 6th, 2019, A visitation will be held from 1:00 until 3:00 pm in Barksdale Hall at Christ Episcopal Church, 3245 Franklin Turnpike, Danville, Virginia 24540 with the Celebration of Life Service beginning at 3:00 pm with Reverend Robert Hamilton officiating. A private interment will follow with the family at the church.
